My typical beauty maintenance was a lot more than I thought. Once I lost my job, I quickly saw where my money went and how much. I always had a budget, but it hits differently when you can no longer do the things you used to. Glow up with me; these are my summer tips for a budget-friendly transformation (DIY beauty).
My beauty maintenance before:
Laser hair removal: 100-2k
Lash full-set: 140-250$
Nails: 50 -100
Lash fill: 70-150
Hair: 200-500
DIY Beauty budget cuts
The first thing to go for me was the lashes and hair. As an adult these are certain hair styles you will need to learn to do yourself. Once you invest in a couple of really good wigs, they will last you years. I have wigs in my collection that last since 2015.
Tip # 1 Learn to do your hair and invest in a couple of good wigs
My wigs are divided into two types, which took me years to accumulate. I advise doing this while you are up and working with a lot of cash flow. One thing about life is that sometimes there will be a harvest and sometimes there will be a drought. Invest in wigs during your harvest so when the money is lower you will not have to resort to being stressed out about hair.
Congratulations! If you are reading this and do not need protective styling, hair upkeep is cheaper!
Places I get hair:
- Whatsapp – get your hair straight from a supplier and do not pay all the mark-up fees
- Amazon
- US Wholesaler
- My hairstylist
Secondly, lashes were the next most expensive thing that did not last.
Tip # 2: Invest in a good strip lash
( I like Lilly lashes or these from Amazon) or try to do your DIY extensions yourself. ( amazon link)
Eyelash extensions and I have a love-hate relationship. I like that they automatically make your face look done, but some of the adhesives can be very dangerous, being so close to your eye. Whenever I had the extensions, my face would oil more, I had more eye boogers in the morning, and my eyes would crust.
One time, I even had an allergic reaction and had to get them removed, and that was the worst part. The remover got into my eye due to one of the techs putting too much, and it seeped into my lid.
Tip #3 Ditch the nail salon
Go for a press on or gel x
Your nails need a break anyway! Take it from an acrylic girlie who never gave her nails a break. The acrylic ate my nail beds up so severely that the nerve endings on my nails were exposed.
Don’t get scared, that was from years of no breaks! However, stop paying to get your nails dont and do them yourself. You have a couple of options here:
- Paint them the old school way (OPI or Essie polish)
- Gel nails
- Gel -x
- Press on with glue
Once you decide which option you want to start with, start buying some of the things. I have a good press-on review article about Kiss at Home Nails for you to check out. My most complimented press-ons are from the one and only Sheen.
I know, crazy, right? Shein has press-on nails, and they are the BEST. They are priced around 1-4 dollars.

Tip #4 Buy an electric foot file
When I got laid off, I even stopped getting pedicures, but honestly, my feet were so crusty! I was asleep one night and felt my own feet. I immediately got embarrassed. I am not sure what is going on in society, but I do see that when you get a pedicure, it does not come with callus removal.
Tip # 5 Go back to shaving or wax at home
Once you invest in laser hair removal, it is excellent, but your hair will start returning if you do not get touch-ups. Once I moved here, I did not find a place that charged a good enough price and after getting laid off, I had to shift some things.
I went back to shaving simply because, after the laser treatment, my hair had not grown back long enough for a wax yet.
Waxing adds up, so if you are brave enough, consider waxing yourself! It takes a lot of courage to do that and some getting used to it, but you will save so much in the long run. As an honorable mention, nair.
The girlies love nair, but I did not list it first because of the chemicals attached to the product.
