That girl books to read…… All of a sudden, I am more inclined to read books! After becoming a serial podcast listener, I often got a ton of book recommendations and wondered what I would do with all the books I had on my list. I love books that teach me something; I honestly cannot tell you the last time I read a book that was fiction. Okay, I lied there is one and it did make the list because of my childhood obsession with Americas Next top model.
This blog post is on some of the best books I’ve read last year; no spoilers, I promise. By the time you finish reading the list, you will have multiple books to add to your to-do list. Big shout out to audible, for helping me get through some books on long drives.
In no particular order, these are the books that will help you become That Girl!
Loving him without Losing you
I mentioned this book in my blog post about dating lessons I learned. Read the post here.
After my latest breakup, I found myself exhausted from dealing with men who did not know how to communicate properly. I felt so alone because I did not have many friends since I moved from my hometown. One friend told me I should read this book; she recommends it to every woman. I felt like a piece of me was missing after my break up.
Have you ever watched someone walk out of your life with you ?
Feeling like something is missing is one of the most painful feelings. After hearing her rave about it being one of her favorite books, I bought it. The book talks about the concept of a “disappearing woman”, now there is levels to it. Disappearing women are women who give themselves to men and lose their sense of identity! The book talks about the psychological ways we women pick up these traits from societal pressures and in our households.
I told my friend, girl, that doesn’t sound like me, but trust and believe, it is, and it is you too. You’d be surprised how many of the little sayings that are told to us when we are young indeed affect us.
When Women Pray
Now, this is one of my favorite books by T.D. Jakes. I’d like you to focus less on the author and more on the message, lol. This book outlines the importance of praying and shares bible stories of influential women and what happened when they did. I love that the book breaks it down and shares stories from a different perspective you do not hear in church.
Prayer is sometimes an afterthought and not my first line of defense; after reading that book, it is what I do daily and multiple times.
I always thought praying had to be formal, or I did not know what to say. Even when you cannot find the words, God knows your heart.
21 Financial Fast for Financial Freedom
I genuinely believe God led me to this book. I joined my church and gave a shoutout to my ex-boyfriend’s former best friend. I also joined a small financial group because I felt I needed to be a better steward of my finances.
The 21-day financial fast changed my life, and I plan to do it once a year. It was my first time looking at my finances as not my own. God is the one who provides my funds. The book has daily exercises to follow and journal prompts. The basis of the fast is to only spend money on essential things, like rent, groceries, and bills. It forces you to get creative to do different things with your friends and find ways to do self-care.
The mountain is you
Half of the things we do not get to accomplish are because we are scared or actively participating in self-sabotage. Before this book, I thought that self-sabotage was just other people ruining relationships because they weren’t as toxic as they were used to. I know- sad. I “read” this book using audible. Ms. West’s voice is so soothing, and if you enjoy audiobooks, you will enjoy this one as much as I do.
The book outlines more than 40 ways we actively self-sabotage ourselves. It also delves into the way others treat you, being less about you and more about the inability to solve problems effectively. I found this book when I first moved to DC, right after my manager had laid me off, and my job began to discriminate more advertently against me. She recommended this book to me and how it helped her get through the mistreatment of our employer.
All that are weary find rest
I stumbled upon this book while working in a hostile work environment. Riddled with anxiety, panic, and fear, my day-to-day activities were tough for me to follow through. At the end of the day, I may not be a medical doctor but I do know that fear and symptoms surrounding it are spirits. While taking medication and doing everything that the world told me to do, nothing was working until I went to God about it. God was the only way for my panic attacks to stop.
How to win friends and influence people
All of these books make good gifts, but this one is the perfect milestone gift, Whether someone is graduating or getting a new job, everything that opens a door in life is usually by another person assisting you. How to win friends and influence people will help you navigate winning people over in some of the most challenging situations you may encounter at work, dating and while making friends.
Bait of Satan
I got the pleasure of hearing John Bevere speak at my church while I was visiting my hometown, Atlanta, GA. The message was not about this book but her other ‘ Multiple X’ but after purchasing that one, I wanted see see other books he wrote.
I came across this book, which was probably one of his first books. The message of this book is timeless.
Understanding the Purpose and Power of women
Having trouble navigating dating and life as a woman? This book taught me how God sees me as a woman and helped silence the noise from social media and what some of these men and their demonic pets say or feel.
This book is encouraging to any woman who is single and/or married because it gives a divine perspective of God’s power.
